IN THE WORKPLACE - Employee Health Plans

Most people think that the insurance company determines their health benefits. But it's your employer that chooses what your health plan covers. Dissatisfied with your lack of contraceptive coverage? The Right Person to send the letter to is your boss, or the manager in charge of employee benefits for your company. If you have a union, you may want to send a letter to your employer and to your union rep.

We believe that a college or university that covers prescriptions in the student health plan is required to cover contraception in the same way as other prescriptions. If your student insurance plan covers prescriptions but not contraception, you can make a difference. Several young women have been able to obtain contraceptive coverage in their student insurance plans at their university, including New York University, the University of Delaware, University of Virginia, University of Illinois, and others. Remember, it is up to each school to choose a plan that treats the students fairly. Send a letter to the person/people in charge of choosing the student health insurance plan, and keep the pressure on by encouraging other students, faculty, and staff to ask for contraceptive coverage, too.

Personalize your letter. Some suggested talking points:

  • The cost of contraception doesn't justify its exclusion.
  • Universities must not penalize female students in an effort to lower their costs.
  • Write your Representatives! Tell them to support health care for women!

  • Access to contraception is particularly important for women in their college years.
  • Furthermore, exclusion of contraception from student insurance prescription plans may constitute sex discrimination under Title IX of the Civil Rights Act.
